What Are We Doing Right Now?
What Are We Doing Right Now?
We will be making improvements to existing pedestrian crossings around Coed y Dderwen School to meet todays standard in line with Active Travel Design Guidance.
We want to encourage children and families to walk or cycle to school and we want them to do it safely.
The works will commence on site on the 5th of August and complete on the 30th August.
Your co-operation during this time is required and appreciated.
Further to the success in obtaining grants from the Active Travel Fund from Welsh Government’s for 2024/25, we have been busy developing plans.
You may have seen that we have provided new banners around the town centre highlighting our beautiful trails and our commitment as an authority towards active travel and accessibility for all.
We are currently developing proposals to enhance pedestrian and cycling facilities at Caedraw roundabout and along Avenue de Clichy, and a planning application for a new Active Travel bridge link across the river Taff from the town centre to the College.
We have applied to the Welsh Government for powers to enforce Moving Traffic Offences. This will allow us to ensure adherence to existing traffic orders that make our streets safer for residents, especially those outside our schools.
The Council has prepared a work package for the next stage of development for the exciting proposal of re-opening the Abernant Tunnel for Active Travel. It is hoped that a consultant will be appointed by the end of July to undertake this work in 2024/25.
We continue to develop Active Travel plans for Pantyscallog Primary School and Thomastown, as well as the A465 links at Dowlais and Swansea Road.
Recently the local authority carried out work on the trails network to remove barriers which inhibit access for those with reduced mobility.
If there is a barrier which you would like to see removed, please email us with further details at active.travel@merthyr.gov.uk
We plan to hold a Public Consultation exercise in the town centre to share all our proposals and gather feedback in the Autumn.
